It starts with the sound of water cascading over rocks then becomes the rhythmic marks of a pen before transforming into the full-body choreography of ink on paper.

The beauty of taking my sketchbook out into the landscape is that it is a 360 degree, sensory experience. Yet a single drawing doesn’t always capture the feeling of walking through the woods or sit on a rock by the river and feel the rushing water behind.

In these unique silkscreen prints, I layer images from my sketchbook to create the immersive experience of being in the woods.

The images are developed by using an improvisational approach where each layer of marks is made in response to the ones that came before. In this way, the image comes into being through the physical act of printing.

Each body of prints is created by working on ten or more at a time. I give myself very little time to think or plan the image. Instead, I look and respond to what the image needs next and ending when it feels complete.

In the same way that the drawings from different locations in my sketchbook merge as one across the page, after printing I arrange and rearrange the prints to find a continuous landscape.
