The Rabbits of Block Island
At the end of April, I boarded the ferry to Block Island for the Sea Breeze Artist Residency.
During my time there, I met people who call the island home and captured their connection to it as rabbits.
Kim leads a nature walk at Dickens Farm.
The “Crazy as a Coot” bird walkers spy on an osprey nest.
Climate resilience tour at the Coast Guard Station with Nora.
Tracy the mother of Block Island and keeper of bees.
Suited up for a visit to Bodhi’s Bees.
Andrea, a passionate gardener and the founder of Sea Breeze Artist Residency.
Morning coffee at the Odd Fellows Cafe.
A quiet weeknight at the Poor People’s Pub.
Seals now make the North Light their home. Enjoy from a distance. Swimming is exhausting and they need their rest.
Painting one of my favorite rocks at the Mohegan Bluffs.
Gathering pots & kettles at Clay Head.
Picnic lunch behind the Sea Breeze Inn.
The Sea Breeze Artist Residency was established in 2023 to provide visual artists and writers with uninterrupted time to focus on their creative work, while honoring Mary Newhouse’s advocacy for the arts and her love of Block Island. Residents receive a private room, studio space, daily breakfast and lunch, and a stipend to help cover dinner and travel expenses. During the residency, participants engage with the community through an artist talk and a workshop for local students. The 10-day residencies are offered in April/May and October. For more information, visit the Sea Breeze Artist Residency website. Applications are generally announced early in the year. Fellow artists, I encourage you to apply!
